Definition of a Speech
To deliver a spoken communication, expressing thoughts, which is composed for a specific audience for a specific time. Speeches are often memorized, but a written copy is produced for the writer's use when delivering the speech.

What are the formal types?

  • Informative speech Definition: An Informative speech is written to provide interesting and useful information to increase the knowledge of your audience.
  • Declamation speech definition: Declamation, or Oratorical Declamation, is the interpretation of a non-original content, often taken from events in history or up to date magazine articles
  • Persuasive speech definition: A persuasive speech is to persuade people to change in some way
  • Motivational or Inspirational speech definition: The purpose of a highly emotional motivational or inspirational speech is to stimulate the audience to pursue certain goals

How long should a speech last? Lengths vary according to the speaker, event and audience. Formal speeches are longer than informal ones. A good formal speech or address takes, on average, between 5 and 10 minutes to deliver, whereas the informal speech can range from just 1 to 4 minutes.
